Client Brief
The client appointed us to deliver a full refurbishment and reconfiguration of the ground floor at this Victorian property in Bengeo, Hertford. The works formed part of a wider strategic improvement to the property, including future access to the lower-ground floor (basement) and improved connection to the rear garden. They also wanted to maximise head height in both the kitchen and basement.
Project Description
The Wellington Street project in Hertford was the first of several jobs we carried out in the Bengeo area. During the project we had staged inspections organised with Building Control and Structural Engineer
The project goals that we achieved included the following:
- Underpinning the whole of the ground floor to enable us to create a new kitchen and to achieve full head height ensuring a clean transition between the old and new spaces with matching floor levels (with concealed steelwork).
- Creating a larger, open-plan kitchen/dining space by extending the ground floor at the rear.
- Forming a new staircase down to the basement.
- Improving natural light via a large skylight over the kitchen extension.
- Introducing underfloor heating.
- Enhancing rear access, and garden usability through new landscaping layout with a through-corridor design.
- Mechanical and electrical works that included upgrades to heating, lighting, electrics as part of the fabric-first approach.
- Delivering a clean, contemporary finish aligned with the interior kitchen design style.
